Tournament Rules

The Court:    The court will consist of at least ½ size a basketball court (approximate).

Equipment:  Five dodge balls will be used for each game.

Officials:  The officials’ decisions are final.  For example, unnecessary roughness or an intentional head shot could cause a player to be removed from the tournament at an official’s discretion.

Players:   Teams consist of five players.  Teams may consist of either gender. Any ratio of men and women may participate, including all male and all female teams. Players must be at least middle school attendance age.

Retrievers:  Dodge ball retrievers will be available to keep balls from interfering with the other court and to return balls to the appropriate court.

Games:  A game is played until a 5-minute time limit expires or all opponents are eliminated on one side. If time expires, all remaining players are counted. The team with most players remaining wins the game. In case of a tie, a two-minute show down game will be played.  If there is still a tie after two minutes of show down play, a game of rock, paper scissors will be played to determine the winner.

Beginning Play:  Play begins with all players positioned behind their team's end line. Time will be started when an official blows his whistle.

The Rush:  The Rush occurs at the beginning of each game or reset. Upon the official's signal, both teams rush to center court and attempt to retrieve as many balls as possible. There is no limit to how many balls an individual player may retrieve. Players may not slide or dive head first to retrieve balls or cross over the centerline.  This will result in an "out."

Putting a Ball in Play:  After the Rush, a player carries the ball to the end line. A player passes the ball to a teammate who is at the end line.

Time Outs:   There are no time outs.

**Outs:  A player shall be deemed "out" when a live ball hits any part of the player's body, clothing, or uniform; a player is hit by a live ball rebounding off another player or ball lying on the court; or if a defending player catches a live ball the player has thrown. A player shall return from the Queue in the order they were put “out.”

**Blocking:   Players can defend themselves by blocking the ball in flight with another ball but must retain control over the ball they are blocking with. A player dropping or losing possession of the blocking ball is deemed "out." Any blocked ball rebounding off another ball is considered live. Any player hit by the rebounding ball is deemed "out."

Stalling:  The act of intentionally delaying the game. If a referee determines that a player or team is stalling, the referee will warn player or team. If the stalling continues, at the official’s discretion, player or team will lose possession of all balls on their side.

Out of Bounds Rule:  If any part of the player's body touches the area deemed out of bounds, the player is “out.”

Attire:  No article of clothing with obscene/objectionable material will be allowed. Only shoes with non-marking soles are allowed on the playing floor.

Forfeiture of Game:  If a team is not present on the court at its designated game time, the team will forfeit the match and the opposing team will be deemed the winner.

School Policy:  School policies will be observed.
